Woods Canyon-Chevelon Creek Adventure

We just got back from a fabulous trip to Chevelon Creek - downstream of Woods Canyon Lake (about 30 miles outside of Payson). Being Labor Day weekend, we got to share the roads with lots and lots of people. But once we finally found a spot to park the car and walked below the Woods Canyon Lake dam, it was smooth sailing. Actually, it was like we jumped into a remote wilderness area because we didn't see one person all weekend!! We had an inkling this might be the case after talking to numerous campground hosts, employees at the lake store and forest service employees and discovering that none of them even knew there was good hiking below the dam.

Our group consisted of the Gidley family (Matt, Julie and Tommy), 2 of our friends (Janice and Daryl) and their 2 dogs (Nugget and Jackson).

The weather was nice and cool with a few scattered showers - a perfect escape from the lingering Phoenix summer heat.

What a gem!

Very nice! I'm familiar with Chevelon Canyon-many many moons ago I traveled a dirt road through Chevelon Canyon with Papa and M&M, can't remember if Janene was with. Not sure why we were in the area or how we decided to take a dirt road, (with the family car), but I remember it was beautiful. Nice to see it still is!!

How funny! You know, my mom used to always pull that trick (i.e. I'd think I "discovered" a wonderful new backpacking destination and she's say how they went there 20+ years ago!).

It is a good secret gem, I have day hiked there and always thought it would make for a nice backpack. I was thinking of you as I stayed home and organized my filing cabinet : )

What an awesome adventure, Julie and Matt! Though we've been on one camp trip to Woods Canyon, we haven't tried the remote wilderness sites. I'll have to keep it on our list for future visits!

Thanks for sharing!

Yes, this Woods Canyon/Chevelon Creek is a well kept secret...not to be confused with the Woods Canyon near Sedona. (We also noticed there seem to be 'Sycamore Canyons' all over the place...and New Zealand had a number of "Bridal Veil Falls")
